My approach
What I love about Gestalt theory, counselling, therapy, and practice is its humanistic and existential foundation, a space where real contact and dialogue can truly unfold. Stepping into counselling/therapy, much like stepping into a new life situation, places you in a field of forces. These forces may be fluid or rigid, allowing movement or leading to a sense of being stuck. Within this relational field, we are invited into a creative exploration that can lead to either adapting to the current situation or creating new possibilities.
When working with me, you can expect an open, equal, and inclusive dialogue that shapes the safe space of our sessions. Together, we explore and uncover the fixed patterns still influencing your present life. We acknowledge that the individual and environment are inseparable, constantly shaping one another, and we examine the dynamic context they create. As a result, we identify, experiment with, and integrate new ways of relating: to yourself, to others, and to the world.
In the words of Laura Perls, (co-founder of Gestalt Therapy)
Contact is made in any actual present situation, the only moment in which experience and change are possible. Whenever we think and talk of the past, our memories, regrets, resentments, grief, or nostalgia occur and are relevant right here and now, in the present. Whenever we talk about the future, we are fantasizing, planning, hoping, expecting, conspiring, looking forward to or dreading from where we are here and now, in the present situation.
Gestalt therapy is an existential, experiential and experimental approach which takes bearings from what is, not from what has been or what should be. No interpretation is necessary as we work with what is available in the actual present awareness […] and what becomes possible to experiment with through this ever-increasing awareness.
My approach starts from meeting you where you are, as you are, inviting an open dialogue that engages us in exploring
- The present-moment awareness of your needs and physical sensations
- The embodied experience of the here-and-now of your situation
- The relational co-creation that emerges in the therapy room, and beyond
